El Superclásico in Copa Libertadores Semifinal (2004)
At the height of Boca Junior's period of stardom, they matched up against rivals River Plate in the semifinals of the Copa Libertadores. Boca had won three Libertadores titles in the previous four years going into this match. Following a first leg at Estadio Monumental where Boca Juniors emerged victorious 1-0, River was desperate to turn the tides. The second leg at La Bombonera featured late game heroics from both sides, ending in a penalty shootout where Ronaldo Schiavi secured the victory. Boca would go onto loose against the Colombian Once Caldas squad in the Copa Libertadores finals.
1978 Copa Libertadores Final
Fresh off the club’s first Copa Libertadores victory in 1977, Boca found themselves in the finals again, this time against Colombia’s Deportivo Cali. Following a 0-0 first leg in Cali, Boca scored four goals in the second leg, making them back-to-back champions of South America, propelling them into global football stardom.
2014 UEFA Champions League Final: Real Madrid vs. Atlético Madrid
As Real Madrid had a chance to secure their 10th European Cup title, they faced El Derbi Madrileño rival, Atlético Madrid, in the Champions League Final. After trailing most of the match due to a 36th minute goal by Atlético, Sergio Ramos delivered a punishing header to the bottom left corner from Luka Modric's superb corner in the 93rd minute, thus pushing the match to extra time. The rivalry game became lopsided in Real Madrid's favor in extra time, with goals from Gareth Bale (110'), Marcelo (118'), and Ronaldo (120', pen). Real Madrid were crowned as European Champions yet again, nicknaming their tenth victory "La Décima".
Dinamo Zagreb vs. Leeds United: Inter-Cities Fairs Cup Final, 1967
This two-legged final marked the greatest achievement in Dinamo’s European history, as they became the first Yugoslav club to win a major continental trophy. Facing a talented Leeds United side featuring several England internationals, Dinamo dominated the first leg at Maksimir Stadium, winning 2–0 with goals from Marijan Čerček and Krasnodar Rora in front of a crowd of over 30,000. Holding Leeds to a 0–0 draw in the return leg at Elland Road, Dinamo lifted the Inter-Cities Fairs Cup, the predecessor to the UEFA Cup and Europa League. Captained by Slaven Zambata, this victory is still remembered as a symbol of the club’s golden era and a proud moment for Croatian football under Yugoslav rule.
Dinamo Zagreb vs. Tottenham Hotspur: UEFA Europa League Round of 16, 2021
This match is remembered as one of the most stunning comebacks in recent European football history. After losing 2–0 in London, few believed Dinamo could overturn the deficit against José Mourinho’s Spurs. But at Maksimir Stadium, Mislav Oršić delivered a career-defining performance, scoring a hat-trick; one of the greatest individual displays in the club’s history. His third goal, scored in extra time, completed the turnaround and sent Dinamo to the UEFA Europa League quarterfinals for the first time ever. The victory was made even more dramatic by the fact that Dinamo’s coach Zoran Mamić had resigned just days earlier due to a corruption conviction, leaving assistant Damir Krznar in charge. Against all odds, Dinamo triumphed, and the match became a modern-day legend in Zagreb.
