On the 27th of April, 2025, River Plate hosted rivals Boca Juniors in what was the largest crowd in River’s Estadio Monumental history: 85,018 spectators. The two rival’s last meeting came 7 months before when River emerged victorious with a 1-0 scoreline. Boca had enjoyed success so far in the season season, sitting at the top of Zone A with 32 points - the top team in the nation.
Although the score suggests it was a tighter game, River dominated throughout the 90 minutes. In the first 15 minutes, River Plate had three opportunities to score, but all the attempts were saved by Boca’s goalie, Agustín Marchesín. Following a hard challenge on River’s Sebastián Driussi in the 23rd minute, the ‘young wonder’ Franco Mastantuono scored a masterful goal, which goes down as one of El Superclasico’s greatest goals of all time.
Boca evened the game up in the 37th minute with a goal from Miguel Merentiel, following a mistake from River Plates’ goalie Germán Pezzella. River quickly responded with a goal from Driussi, who knocked in a loose ball after his own header was deflected by the goalkeeper.
Following halftime, River played defensively and risk-averse, eventually sealing the victory. This initial meeting with River lowered Boca’s spirits, although they still remain on top of the table. As the season goes on, they will prepare for their next match against River Plate on November 9th at La Bombonera.
